Throughout the year there were a number of headlines and data points that impacted the performance of the markets but for the most of the year the main drivers were the sharp decline in earnings in the energy sector, a strengthening dollar which lowered the earnings of U.S. companies with international sales and the concern over slower economic growth in China.
