For the past several years, international equities have been one of the weaker performing asset classes. This weakness was very prevalent last year when the MSCI EAFE Index, which tracks international equities in developed countries, was down almost 5% and the emerging market index was down just over 2% while the S&P 500 index was up almost 14%. In the first quarter of this year, the roles reversed and international equities became the strongest performing asset class.
